Our female athlete of the month is Glendese Miller-Lyn! Today is Glendese’s BIRTHDAY, so make sure to wish her a very Happy Birthday! Glendese started at FitTown in BeachFit for 2 years and transitioned to FTX last year. She continually looks to push herself by trying new weights and movements.

When she’s not taking out people on the dodgeball court, she’s helping others live healthier lives as an Internal Medicine Physician. She tells her coaches at FitTown how she’s always encouraging her patients to improve their fitness and nutrition. She doesn’t just talk the talk, but also walks the walk, by practicing what she preaches. “It is a great joy for me when I am able to take a patient off medication because he or she has become more physically active, lost weight or changed their diet,” says Glendese.

She’s been a consistent AM athlete at our earliest classes, totaling almost 600 workouts in her time at FitTown. Even through a broken toe and a worldwide pandemic, nothing has been able to slow her down!

Thank you Glendese for being a provider of health in our community and an awesome member of our FitTown family!

Glendese! Tell us a little about yourself!
I am from the beautiful island of Jamaica. I am married with 3 children ages 17, 14 and 12.  I graduated from medical school in 1998 and then after getting married, my husband and I came to the USA in 2001. We both did Internal Medicine residency at Harlem Hospital Center in New York. We worked in Kentucky for 5 years after training, and then moved to Palm Beach Gardens in 2009. We have family in Florida, it's a 90 minute flight to Jamaica so it was an easy decision to move here.

How does your belief in fitness play a role in your work and how you help others?
I am an Internal Medicine Physician (aka adult primary care doctor) and I always wanted to be a doctor. I enjoy being of service to others, I feel honored to be able to do it. I try to inspire my patients to lead a healthy lifestyle. Exercise improves physical and mental health. It is a great joy for me when I am able to take a patient off medication because he or she has become more physically active, lost weight or changed their diet. I also feel better counselling patients about preventative health with regular diet and exercise because I am practicing what I preach. I want to be an example for my family and my patients.

What’s something about you that others may not know about you?  Any special talents, hobbies, or interests?
I love most types of music and I LOVE to dance. Dancing is another reason I work out, because I always want to be able to dance all night.  I have a bucket list of 'to-dos' including going back to playing the piano and learning Line and Latin dancing.

What motivated you to get started at FitTown? What do you remember most about when you first started?
I worked with someone at Good Samaritan Hospital who encouraged me to join. I remember feeling very nervous and drove by the gym quite a few times before I worked up the courage to walk in - never looked back since. I remember the professionalism of the staff and welcoming atmosphere. I used to work out at another gym in Jupiter, where I aggravated a neck injury which resulted in cervical spine surgery. I went back to that gym after my surgery but I did not feel that the staff was able to safely guide my recovery. I stayed away from gyms for a few years and started running and doing workouts on my own but I was not happy with my exercise regime. Finally I decided to try FitTown (BeachFit). I was very cautious in the beginning (still very cautious) and I was impressed with the staff here and their attention to each person's individual needs. I never felt pressured to do anything crazy and modification was always a welcome option whenever I felt unsure or unable to do the planned workout.

What positive physical progress or accomplishment would you like to brag about yourself?
In November 2019 I broke my toe and I did not get to train for the Fort Lauderdale A1A Half marathon. Even though I did not prepare by running (I still attended BeachFit with modifications), I was able to finish only 4 minutes slower than the previous year. A testament to the fitness level achieved with regular attendance at FitTown. I also did a modified Murph this year which was a big accomplishment for me.

Do you have any memorable moments/workouts at FitTown that you’d like to share?
When I broke my toe, I was able to still attend classes regularly and the coaches were very helpful with modifications.
I played dodgeball with coach Melissa's team even though I had never played dodgeball before. I had so much fun. It was EPIC!!

What keeps you motivated? What do you remind yourself of on days when you don’t “feel” like going to the gym?
I remind myself that I always feel better after attending a class. I have never regretted attending a class but I have regretted missing many classes.
Just Show Up!

What advice do you have for the person who’s hesitant about starting a fitness program like this?
Just show up. Just like you maintain a car by investing in a regular service schedule, your physical health deserves the investment of regular physical activity. Self care is not self-indulgence.
This is a safe space to grow physically and mentally where FItTown caters to all levels of fitness and children from 6 to 96.

What do you love most about FitTown Jupiter?
MANY THINGS!
The professionalism of the coaches and front desk staff is consistent and I appreciate that you guys take your job seriously.
I love that FitTown is actively involved in giving back to the community.
The attention to proper form and technique. There is always room to be competitive which I love and admire but preventing injury is also important because it maintains longevity and health of members.
Inclusive feeling, which most people here take for granted but as a minority, I do appreciate that I have felt welcomed from day one. I feel honored to be chosen as July's Athlete of the Month. Thank You.
